What is Express Entry?
Express Entry is not a program, it's a vehicle (system and process) that houses four distinct federal immigration programs, each with its own eligibility criteria and purpose. Launched in January 2015, it fundamentally transformed Canadian immigration by replacing paper-based applications with a digital, fast-tracked system.
Why was it created? Canada faces a demographic challenge: an aging population and declining birth rates threaten the workforce and economy. Express Entry was designed to rapidly attract younger, highly skilled, and highly educated workers from around the world to fill critical labour gaps and sustain Canada's economic growth.
How it works: Express Entry uses a points-based Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) to rank candidates. IRCC regularly issues "draws", inviting the highest-ranking candidates to apply for permanent residence. Most candidates receive a decision within 6 months.

International skilled workers with education, language, and work experience.
Skilled trades workers with Red Seal certifications and English/French proficiency.
Workers with 1+ year of Canadian skilled work experience.

The Future of Express Entry
As of spring 2026, IRCC is proposing a major overhaul: replacing the three federal programs (FSW, FST, CEC) with a unified system focused on high-wage occupations and work experience. A Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) stream will be integrated directly into the new system. The 600-point nomination bonus will remain, making PNP even more valuable. How It Works
Express Entry uses a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) to rank candidates. The highest-scoring applicants receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA).
Federal Skilled Worker
Point-based for workers with skilled occupations in demand, education, and language ability.
Federal Skilled Trades
For workers in Red Seal trades, journeyperson certification, and English/French proficiency.
Canadian Experience Class
For those with Canadian work experience (full-time, skilled roles, 1+ years in the past 3 years).
Provincial Nominee Program
Apply to a provincial stream and receive a nomination, adding 600 CRS bonus points to your profile.

Score a minimum of 67/100 on the FSW eligibility assessment to qualify.

Up to 110 ptsHighest points awarded ages 20-29. Points decrease after 29.
Education
Up to 150 ptsPostsecondary credentials. Master's or PhD award more points than Bachelor's.
Language Proficiency
Up to 160 ptsEnglish & French scores. CLB 9+ in English or French gets maximum points.
Work Experience
Up to 80 ptsPoints for 1-3+ years of skilled work in past 10 years.
Arranged Employment
200 ptsValid job offer from a Canadian employer (LMIA-exempt).
Provincial Nomination
600 ptsNomination from a Canadian province adds instant bonus points.
French Language Bonus
Up to 50 ptsExtra points if you have intermediate+ French with decent English.

Up to 30 ptsCredentials from Canadian postsecondary institutions.

Receive a PR Decision
If approved, you become a Permanent Resident. Then you can sponsor family and settle in Canada.

Express Entry is Not for Everyone
You may not be eligible for Express Entry if: you lack a skilled work background, don't have sufficient language proficiency (CLB 7+), hold a family sponsorship visa, are seeking refuge, or have caregiving experience but limited other credentials. Don't worry, Canada has alternatives:
Family Sponsorship

Study Permit to PGWP
Study in Canada, work after graduation, then apply via CEC with Canadian experience.
