What Kind of Travel Authorization Do You Need?
The document you need depends on your nationality and how you are travelling to Canada.
No visa, no eTA required. Present a valid US passport or passport card at the border or port of entry. US citizens enjoy seamless entry to Canada.
If your country is visa-exempt (e.g. UK, Australia, EU, Japan), you need an eTA to fly to Canada. No eTA needed if travelling by land or sea.
If your country requires a visa (e.g. India, China, Nigeria, Pakistan), you need a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) before travelling to Canada.
The Super Visa allows long-term visits of up to 5 years per entry. Ideal for parents/grandparents of Canadian citizens or PR holders.
If you have a criminal record or medical condition, you may still be able to visit Canada through a Temporary Resident Permit (TRP).
Visitor Visa
Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) - Visitor Visa
A Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) is required for citizens of visa-required countries who wish to enter Canada as tourists, business visitors, or for other temporary purposes. Canada welcomes over 35 million temporary residents per year.
A valid TRV does not guarantee entry to Canada. At the Port of Entry, officers will verify that your visit is genuinely temporary. You must demonstrate you intend to leave Canada when your authorized stay ends.
Must include your photo, name, date of birth, passport number, and dates of issue and expiry. Photocopies of the information page are required.
Bank statements (last 3 months), pay stubs, employment letter, or evidence of financial support from a Canadian host/family member.
Employment contract, property ownership, family responsibilities, or other strong reasons demonstrating you will return home after your visit.
Invitation letter from a Canadian host, travel itinerary, hotel bookings, event registration, or other documentation supporting your stated reason for visiting.
Most applicants must provide fingerprints and a photo at a Visa Application Centre (VAC). Fee: CAD $85 per person or $170 for a family.
Required if staying more than 6 months, or if you have recently lived in certain countries. Must be performed by a designated Panel Physician.
Citizens of the following countries normally require a TRV, but may qualify for an eTA if they hold a valid US non-immigrant visa or have held a Canadian visa in the last 10 years, and are arriving by air:
