FEDERAL SKILLED TRADES CLASS

FSTC applications are assessed based on an applicant's qualifications and experience as well as their ability to be economically independent upon immigration to Canada.

Since inception on January 1, 2015, FSTC applications are being processed through the Express Entry immigration selection system for immigration to Canada. 

​

The Federal Skilled Trades Class (FSTC) allows individuals with job offers or appropriate certification to work in certain occupations to obtain Canadian permanent residence in any Canadian province or territory other than Quebec.

Are you Eligible? - These are the Criteria

​

To be considered eligible for a Canadian Immigration (Permanent Resident) Visa, FSTC you must:

​

• Have offers of employment from up to two employers in Canada of at least one year duration OR a Certificate of Qualification from a provincial or territorial body;

• Provide proof of basic language proficiency from a designated language testing organization, demonstrating that the applicant meets the minimum threshold set by the Minister — Canadian Level Benchmark (CLB) 5 for speaking and listening, CLB 4 for reading and writing;

• Have obtained 24 months of qualified work experience in the skilled trade in the last five years; and

• Be able to demonstrate the skills and experience and that they have performed the essential duties of the occupation.

 

All NOC B level occupations will be eligible for this program. This amounts to a total of 90 eligible occupations.

These eligible occupations fall into the following general categories:

​

• Butchers and bakers.

• Chefs and cooks; 

• Industrial, electrical and construction trades;

• Maintenance and equipment operation trades;

• Processing, manufacturing and utilities supervisors and central control operators; and

• Supervisors and technical occupations in national resources, agriculture and related production.

 

Once it has been determined that you meet the eligibility and points requirements, you must show that you have sufficient settlement funds to support yourself and any dependents after your arrival in Canada. Finally, You and your dependents must also undergo medical examinations and obtain security clearances as part of the Canadian immigration application process.

Note: the Canadian government recognizes that the points awarded under the FSTC system do not always accurately reflect an applicant's chances of successfully establishing themselves in Canada. As a result, Citizenship and Immigration Canada Officers are authorized to use an alternate method of assessing an application. Under the concept of "substituted evaluation", a Visa Officer may make their own evaluation for the likelihood of the applicant becoming economically established in Canada. This method allows the Visa Officer to accept or refuse the applicant no matter how many points the applicant has achieved.
